A Brave Woman

My mother-in-law, Susan Dexter, was carjacked Monday morning and managed to escape by jumping from the moving vehicle.  Faced with threats of death, she kept a level head and found a way out of the situation.  I am relieved that she got through the awful experience with no major injuries and I am also extremely proud of her calm and bravery that helped her get out of a dangerous situation.

She talked with the kidnapper easily and plotted her escape while cruising toward a nearby Bank of America. His voice chilled her, but she said she didn't give off a hint of fear.

"He said, 'Listen, if you don't do what I tell you, I'll stab you or kill you,' " Dexter said Wednesday. "He said, 'I need you to help me out. My mother's sick in the hospital, my brother's been murdered and I need $2,000.' "

Another reminder to be conscious of your surroundings and lock your car doors when you get in.  If you are faced with this kind of situation, don't panic, try to think clearly and make your move early.

Update 7/12/06:  In an amazing turn of events, an arrest was made yesterday in the carjacking of my mother-in-law.  Having recorded the incident on her cell phone, police were able to release a voice sample and composite sketch of the perpetrator.  A tip lead to the arrest of Paul Clark.

Clarke didn't offer much of an explanation for detectives.

"He stated he had a drug problem," Ott said. "He never really admitted or denied anything."

Deputies charged him with kidnapping and carjacking with a weapon. Both crimes are felonies punishable by up to life in prison.
